Clinical Review of The Appendiceal Tumor



Abstract
Fewer than 200 documented cases of primary tumor of appendix has been reported in the literature since the first description by Begar in 1882. Primary tumor of the appendix is rare and its incidence is 0.3~0.71% of all gastrointestinal
malignancy.
It is
not easily diagnosed clinically before operation. Most appendiceal tumor patients goes to surgery under the impression of appendicitis or periappendiceal abscess, and only histopathologic report provides the correct final diagnosis.
This paper is the review of 9 cases of appendiceal tumor the were treated at the Department of Surgery, Guro Hospital, College of Medicine, Korea University. 9 cases among total 1148 cases of aucte appendicitis or periappendceal abscess
surgically
treated during 5 years turned out to be appendiceal tumor on final pathology: of incidence of 0.78%.
All of 5 benign tumor were mucinous cystadenoma. Of 4 cases of malignant tumors, 2 cases were mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. adenocarcinoid and malignant lymphoma were one cases each. The incidence of malignant tumor was 0.23% of all
gastrointestinal
malignant treated during same period.
Most of patients except one was over 50-year old and 4 cases out of total 9 cases, who had presented with mass on RLQ, were diagnosed as turn or of cecum or ascending colon, preoperatively.
